Virgil Milliron grew up in Perry Oklahoma, the second of five children. He was involved in athletics, playing baseball, football, and wrestling.  After many injuries which cut short his high school career, Virgil’s wrestling coach got him involved in coaching the junior high team, which continued through his college days at Central State University. After graduating with a BA degree, Virgil served in the US military for two years. Coach Milliron then began a long and illustrious teaching and coaching career. His teams won a total of five high school State Championships at three different schools: John Marshall, State Champions 1963 – 64, US Grant, State Champions 1966-67, and Midwest City High in 1979. Virgil was named Oklahoma Wrestling Coach of the year in 1961, 1966 and 1979. In 1967 he was a charter inductee in the Oklahoma Coaches Hall of Fame along with his legendary Perry High School Coach, John Devine. Through 1970-73, Virgil served on the original faculty (Oscar Rose Junior College). He was the first athletic director, coached the wrestling and tennis teams and was a teacher. His wrestlers were nationally ranked for three years with one National Champion and four All-Americans. He then became head wrestling coach at Auburn University. During Virgil’s tenure, the Tigers won a SEC Championship and was named SEC Coach of the year. After Auburn, Virgil rejoined the faculty as teacher, coach, and athletic director. Virgil was named NJCAA District Tennis Coach of the Year 1981 and Oklahoma Intercollegiate Conference Coach of the Year in Tennis 1982. He served the on the National Wrestling Coaches Association 1962-66, and was two-time President of Oklahoma Wrestling Association.
