In 1970, Everett Gomez won the individual state championship in wrestling at U.S. Grant High School in Oklahoma City.  As a result, Gomez was selected for several individual achievement awards that included, first team Pepsi-Cola High School All-American, Daily Oklahoman outstanding wrestler of the year, and the Tulsa World wrestler of the year.  After graduation, he attended Oklahoma State University and won the U.S. Wrestling Federation national freestyle championship.  In August 1971, Gomez chose to transfer to Oscar Rose Junior College and re-join his high school wrestling Coach Virgil Milliron.  Gomez’s choice to transfer to Oscar Rose Junior College was successful as he won the 1972 National Junior College championship at 118 lbs. Gomez returned to Oklahoma State University and finished his collegiate wrestling career.  After graduation, Gomez was appointed as the head wrestling coach at Claremore Junior College in 1975 thru 1980.  Overall, Gomez’s teams won several tournament team titles, he coached one national champion and five NJCAA All-Americans. In 1980, Gomez was chosen to coach the United States Junior Pan-American freestyle wrestling team held in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
